Affirm Your Holiness
FEB 2021
Mark 9:2-9
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.
In this passage, which is known as the Transfiguration of Christ, Christ’s holiness became self-evident to all in attendance. When they speak of Jesus’s robes becoming whiter than was humanly possible, what they are really referring to is the light from within Jesus reaching such a brilliant state that it is no longer possible in the flesh, thus confirming his Christhood. Jesus was met by spiritual leaders in the personae of Elijah and Moses, as he was preparing to ascend into heaven, and I assume he spoke with them about the preparations for this. What is most important about this moment is that it is the time when Jesus was shedding his mortality, and that brilliant light of the perfect spirit within him was shining forth now in a way never before imaginable.
Jesus himself affirmed both in the Bible and in the Course that he had nothing that we don’t also have; the difference was that he had nothing else but the perfect divine within him. We share the Christ consciousness, all of us without exception. The question is whether we intend to allow it to shine forth unimpeded. We dodge our Christhood for myriad reasons: our fear of stepping out of line with others; our fear of appearing too big for our britches; our fear that those who have raised their head above water in this world have sometimes been killed, or at least be made to feel apart from; our belief that we couldn’t possibly achieve such a state of being; and on and on. We all have our personal fears that keep us from being the very best selves we can be. What we forget, however, is that it is not about us. Our holiness is just that – our wholeness in our connection with God. This gospel is about urging us to remove the bushel that dampens the candle within that is our holiness. Just remember that your connection with God grants you inherent holiness if you’re willing to access it. Not because we are so great but because God is, and there is nothing that God cannot do. Go Love!
